Service Opportunities this Month

There are many opportunities this month to serve Christ and others.  The Witness team, part of the Wesley Foundation’s Student Coordinating Committee, will be sending out a monthly email with service opportunities inside and outside of the Foundation.  Here is a list of what’s going on:

MSA Breakfast: Early Friday morning, September 3, the we will be serving breakfast for the Muslim Student Association as they prepare to fast for Ramadan.  Check out another email detailing the lock-in.

Volunteer with The Haven: The Haven at First & Market is a safe and welcoming place for the homeless and very poor of Central Virginia to be during the day.  In order to volunteer, you must attend an orientation.  Volunteer Orientation is this Friday, September 3rd, from 2-4pm in the sanctuary space of The Haven, 112 W. Market St, off the downtown mall.  You can take the free trolley.

Campus Kitchen: CK at UVA rescues extra food from the dining halls, in addition to getting produce from local farms, and cooks it into nutritious meals that we deliver to various agencies in Charlottesville.  Our Interest Meeting/Orientation will be on September 12 at 7p.m. — the location is still TBA, but email ckuvaATcampuskitchens.org to get on the list.

Wesley Foundation Service Retreat: On Saturday, September 18, we will have an opportunity to participate in a local service project.  Be on the lookout for details!

Wesley Memorial Nursery
: Wesley Memorial Church provides child care during it’s Sunday morning 11:00 worship services.  They have a hired child care provider but need to have at least one other person to meet the 2-adult requirement when working with children.  If you’d be interested in working at the nursery on a Sunday morning, email Renita Sheesley-Banks  ShrenitabanksATearthlink.net

Society of St Andrew: The mission of the Society of St. Andrew is to introduce people to God’s grace in Jesus Christ through meeting their hungers.  Pepsi is granting 1.3 million dollars in September to fund ideas that will refresh the world. SoSA’s approach to feeding the hungry will certainly refresh the world of those in need.  You can help SoSA feed the hungry by voting every day in September for the Society of St. Andrew in the Food & Shelter-$250,000 category found here.

Career Counsel: College is a time of many decisions and confusion for a lot of students as they chose majors and career paths.  It can be difficult to hear how God is calling, especially when this calling is into an unfamiliar field.  The Wesley Foundation is beginning a program to provide students the opportunity to meet with Wesley Memorial members from their prospective major or career.  This is also an opportunity for students to share hobbies and skills with members of Wesley Memorial.  Check out the bulletin board in the Foundation’s dining room with opportunities!

I hope to see you at some of these great opportunities!
