Jan Richardson leads “A Map to the Soul: Exploring a Creative Faith”

For those registered for this Saturday’s workshop-retreat:

Welcome & What to Bring

We are so pleased that you will be joining us for the Jan Richardson workshop-retreat, “A Map to the Soul:  Exploring a Creative Faith” this Saturday, February 20, 2010, from 10am – 4pm.

We’ll begin at 10am that morning, with the welcome/registration table and coffee available by 9:30am in the Wesley Foundation.  Please plan to arrive in time to sign in, get settled, etc.

We will have all the materials needed for the workshop here when you arrive.  If you have a journal (and pen), you may want to bring that for some of the personal reflection time.  We have Bibles, hymnals, and all the art supplies.  Lunch and snacks are provided, too, so we basically want you to bring yourself and enjoy the time here.  Dress is casual.

The Wesley Foundation is located on the corner of Lewis Mountain Road and Emmet Street (route 29), directly across from Mem Gym and the UVA parking garage/ bookstore.

For the Jan Richardson event, you may park in the Wesley Memorial Church lot, accessed from Emmet Street (route 29).  You may also find parking in the UVA garage (for a fee), on Lewis Mountain Road, Thomson Road, or other streets in the neighborhood surrounding us.

When you arrive, follow the sidewalk from the church lot to come into the Wesley Foundation near the red awning.  The registration/welcome table and our first session will be in this building.

DIRECTIONS from out of town to the Wesley Foundation:

From east or west, take I-64 to the Rt. 29 North exit. Go north on 29 to the first exit (Rt. 29 business). Turn right off the exit and proceed to the 4th stoplight at Emmet St. (a T-intersection). Turn left onto Emmet and follow it as it curves. Just past the UVA parking garage on the right you’ll see Wesley Memorial UMC and then the Wesley Foundation on the left.

From the south, take 29 North to 29 business exit. Then follow directions above.

From the north, take 29 South. Do not get on the bypass but continue straight into town on Emmet St. (29 business). The Wesley Foundation is on the right 2 blocks after the intersection with Ivy Rd/University Ave.

A Map to the Soul:  Exploring a Creative Faith

The journey of faith gives us few maps. Though our way may seem chartless at times, the Christian tradition gives us rich wellsprings that help us find our path and sustain us as we travel. In story, art, and scripture, we find gifts that engage our imagination, speak to our soul, and help us navigate the terrain. We invite you to join us for a day that will offer a fresh, challenging, and creative look at our Christian faith. As we engage these wellsprings of story, art, and scripture, we will find new ways to reflect on our journey and to envision the path ahead.

Our cartographer’s tools in this day of reflection will include writing, artwork, conversation in large and small groups, personal times of contemplation, worship, and experiences of the ancient art of lectio divina (sacred reading).

We welcome The Rev. Jan Richardson as our workshop leader.  She is an elder in the Florida Conference and serves as director of The Wellspring Studio, LLC, a ministry that incorporates her vocation as an artist, writer, and ordained minister in the United Methodist Church. A Florida native several generations over, Jan travels widely as a retreat and workshop leader. Her books include Sacred Journeys, Night Visions, and In Wisdom’s Path. She offers artful hospitality online at janrichardson.com and at her blog The Painted Prayerbook (paintedprayerbook.com).

There is still room for you to join us this Saturday!  Cost is $90 ($20 for students).

Mail checks (or bring it with you Saturday) payable to “The Wesley Foundation” to:  Wesley Foundation, 1908 Lewis Mountain Road, Charlottesville VA 22903.

Your space is reserved and registration is complete upon receipt of your check. Register at:  http://www.doodle.com/nf9uad58ndbgwbpf

Jan Richardson’s visit is made possible by the Wesley Foundation, our United Methodist campus ministry at the University of Virginia, as part of our ongoing commitment to bring notable persons of faith to campus to explore themes of ecumenical/interfaith relations and the intersection of church and academy.
